Imperial Presidency? We have a congress suffering from paralysis. We have a president who is a progressive activist and has stated that “If Congress won’t act, I will.” Are we now headed toward an Imperial Presidency? Certainly we have a sitting president who has issued a number of Executive Orders to move his agenda along either because Congress can’t or won’t. Is he abusing the powers of his office? Is President Obama ruling us by fiat? Trying to answer that question without taking political sides I Googled “Executive Orders” and learned that there is a lot of Internet activity concerning the question, some site being blatantly partisan, others trying not to be politically biased. Here is what I found on The American Presidency Project’s website (presidency.ucsb.edu/data/orders.php) covering Executive Orders issued by American presidents during my lifetime: Franklin D. Roosevelt Total 3,522 Harry S. Truman Total 907 I 504 II 403 Dwight D. Eisenhower Total 484 I 266 II 218 John F. Kennedy Total 214 Lyndon B. Johnson Total 325 Richard Nixon Total 346 I 247 II 99 Gerald R. Ford Total 169 Jimmy Carter Total 320 Ronald Reagan Total 381 I 213 II 168 George Bush Total 166 William J. Clinton Total 364 I 200 II 164 George W. Bush Total 291 I 173 II 118 Barack Obama Total 182 I 147 II 35 ________________________________________ Draw your own conclusions.
