Important Development : Sunni Sufi Body Calls For Rejection Of Wahabi Islam Posted on October 18, 2011 by admin — 2 Comments ↓ Few Months back I was reading interview of sufi scholar and according to her sufism is actual Islam and wahabis have hijacked Islam but sufism is essence of Islam which cannot get eradicated.. Now what can be termed as important development sunni sufi body has called for rejection of wahabi Islam. All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board (AIUMB) called for Sufi traditions of Islam propagating tolerance and harmony which according to them is tradition of Islam in India and AIUMB claims to have support of eighty percent of Indian muslims. Now let us first distinguish what is wahabi Isam and what is sufism. Wahabi Islam : Wahabism comes from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab who was muslim scholar of 18th century. Wahabism is strict and conservative school of thought. Muhammad ibn Abd Al Wahhab believed that Islam had seen many innovations and wanted to purge Islam from those innovations. Wahabis dont believe in shrines and even have destroyed many . Wahabis considered quran and hadibh as only authority and consider their interpretation as true interpretation of Islam. Saudi Arabia is wahabi and since it has petro money wahabi Islam has massive influence on muslims world over. Saudi money fund madarassas, mosque buildings and this helps spread of wahabism around the world. A study conducted by the NGO Freedom House found Wahhabi publications in mosques in the United States. These publications included statements that Muslims should not only “always oppose” infidels “in every way”, but “hate them for their religion … for Allah’s sake”, that democracy “is responsible for all the horrible wars of the 20th century”, and that Shia and certain Sunni Muslims were infidels… This makes other faiths and peaceful sufis frown on wahabism… Sufi Islam : Have you ever been to Ajmer’s dargah?. If yes you have had glimpse of sufism. Sufism is defined by its adherents as the inner, mystical dimension of Islam. To enter the way of Sufism, the seeker begins by finding a teacher(guru), as the connection to the teacher(guru) is considered necessary for the growth of the pupil. The teacher, to be genuine, must have received the authorization to teach (ijazah) from another Master of the Way, in an unbroken succession (silsilah) leading back to Sufism’s origin with Muhammad. Coming back to main point , sufism is something which is in synergy to Indianess and another Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan puts its 95% of Indian muslims have hindu ancestor and hinduism is tolerant religion (according to scholar himself). This makes sufism very adaptable in Indian genetics. Wahabis on other hand are far more conservative in their approach and are kind of intolerant. According to All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board (AIUMB) THERE ARE 13-16% Wahabi muslims in India while 80% are sunni sufis!!!!!1. Now AIUMB has called on Indian muslims to reject wahabis and asked government for better share of sunni sufis in various boards like wakaf committee , minority boards,Muslim Personal Law Board which according to AIUMB is dominated by wahabis. This is important development because in country like India which is most diverse , where all faith reside and where all kind of communities live. India is not just a place , it is heritage , culture and country which has had one of longest continuous civilization. In the country which has always been tolerant , secular and inclusive sufism islam is most blending form of Islam .. Let us see how powerful wahabis react to this call from AIUMB ..
