Important Warning-- If you receive an E-mail indicating they are the IRS or if you receive a phone call saying you are being investigated for fraud or failure to file these are SCAMS. Do not respond to the e-mail in any way. For the phone call, obtain a return phone number, hang up and immediately call the real IRS and report the phoney call and give them the phone number you received. The IRS numbers to call to report these scams are 1-800-366-4484 or the Identity Protection Unit at 1-800-908-4490. Remember, the IRS, FTB, or Social Security Admin. does not initiate phone calls, they send letters and notices and will respond to your phone call to them. For E-mail scams or phishing forward the e-mail to the IRS at [email protected].
