Important info to understand for artists beginning their journey out of school. It is important to take initiative and send out your resume and portfolio to many studios and production companies. It is also vital not to just submit blindly. Do your research online. See what you can learn about the potential company, write ups or anything else, even research the person you are contacting, learn about their credentials. Their are many companies out there that are very much aware of your situation. Young artists desperately seeking work to pay off their tremendous loans. This is where these tigers begin their attack. Below is a message I received from an artist who recognized the signs. Take note, keep your ears and your eyes open and for crying out load, dont do anything like this for FREE. Ive really gotta thank you for what you do. Im from Canada and just graduated from my animation program in June. Needless to say, its been tough finding work. So when I got a reply for one of the applications I sent today, I was ecstatic that someone finally replied. We talked for a while, and he explained that they had just signed a deal with Microsoft to publish their game, and that Epic was using their game as promotional material for their Unreal Engine. He also explained that he was looking for solid Animators, Programmers, Artists to join the team and once we bring in our first round of funding were going to hire us all on and open up our office doors officially. Which immediately sounded sketchy. Without following your page, I might have taken up the offer right then and there, but something bothered me, so I asked when the funding would pop up and if I would immediately be paid for the position. His response was Were expecting first round funding by spring / summer and no, everyone including myself is currently working for free to get our names on a shipped title by Microsoft, and then once we secure funding well be offering everyone contributing a full time position. So yeah, remembering what you say all the time, I immediately thanked him for the opportunity and declined the offer. I want my first gig to at least help me pay for student loans! Thanks for making us little guys value ourselves!
