** Important news for ALL property owners in Kefalonia ** ---------------------------------------------- Please do not ignore this message ---------------------------------------------- Home-owners in Kefalonia concerned about the legality of their property should be aware that the deadline for registering any illegal structures or buildings in Greece has been extended until the end of February 2015. Owners of Greek property that are in breach of planning regulations have the opportunity to declare the irregularity and pay a fee - in a many cases by installments - to have their property legalised before the deadline or risk the authorities finding out at a later stage, which may result in a substantial fine. In addition to this, once the February 2015 deadline has passed, legalisation of illegal structures may no longer be possible and this will definitely affect your ability to sell your property or transfer its ownership to another family member. -- What exactly can be legalised? -- The list is extensive, but here are a few examples: 1) New buildings or extensions to existing buildings that were built without a building permit 2) Buildings that were built bigger than specified on the authorised building plans 3) Buildings erected at a different location specified on the building permit or at a differing distance from the property boundary 4) Swimming pools installed without a permit 5) Balconies or roofed terraces converted into living spaces 6) Basements and garages converted into rooms 7) Loft conversions not on the original plans Anyone concerned about the legality of their home in Kefalonia should check their deeds and original planning permission documentation to ensure they match what has actually been built. We will then work in conjunction with a trusted and qualified engineer who will take you through the process of legalisation. Feel free to use the comments box below to ask any questions and I will do the best I can to answer them. Many thanks, Chris
