Important stuff here: The EU and USA are close to implementing a trade agreement (as the result of being lobbied by corporations), one part of which will allow corporations to sue governments for loss of profits. They could file lawsuits after governments pass simple laws, such as environmental laws, minimum wage legislation, bans of specific products, or potentially even increasing certain corporate taxes. For instance, Canada, USA and Mexico have a similar trade agreement (called NAFTA). In 2012 residents of Quebec successfully banned oil fracking to protect the environment. Lone Pine Resources Inc., the oil corporation who have lost out as a result of this, are now suing the Canadian government for $250 million in damages, using clauses in the NAFTA trade agreement as the basis for their case. If you have 5 minutes please use this link to write a short email to the European Commission telling them why you oppose this trade agreement (called the “Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership”), specifically the “Investor-to-State Dispute Settlement” clause which allows companies to sue governments for damages. This is very quick and simple to do and there are tips on what to write: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/tell-ttip-negotiators-not-to-let-corporations-sue-governments#petition
