Impressive Light Bulbs As I was getting ready this morning to go to the office I noticed the three light bulbs that are placed above my bathroom mirror. They were very bright, as always, but I realized something strange about these light bulbs. I realized that I have never needed to change those three light bulbs during the year and three months that I have lived in that house. In fact, I don’t think I have changed a single light bulb in my entire house during that span of time! These bulbs that I own are designed to last and to emit light for a long time, and isn’t that the exact same way we were designed as disciples of the True Light? Jesus came as the light of men, shining into a world of darkness that could not overcome Him (John 1:4-5). He came as the true light, enlightening everyone (John 1:9). Jesus told others, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Just as light is the complete opposite of darkness, Jesus is the complete opposite of evil. His light was always shining bright because He never had a speck or smidge of darkness in Him. In speaking of Jesus, John wrote, “You know that He appeared in order to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.” And Jesus, the greatest light to ever step on this sinful ground of earth, calls us to be followers of Him and to emanate that light to others. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told His disciples, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Why are we the light of the world? Because we follow and love the One from whom that light originates; we reflect Christ to others. We have gone from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of God’s Son (Colossians 1:13). We have gone from being a crooked and twisted generation to now having the privilege of shining brightly in the midst of that same generation (Philippians 2:15). We have gone from standing on God’s lamps to becoming one (Revelation 1:20). Just as those impressive light bulbs in my bathroom have lasted long without a dot of dimness, we are to last long and bright in our light to others – even up to the point of our dying breath (Revelation 2:10). Are we like light bulbs that never need to be changed? Has our light dimmed? Do we need to go to the spiritual store of God’s Word and switch out our bulbs? May we make every effort to keep our lights shining brightly in this world. Our world is dark, but the darker it gets, the brighter our lights can shine! You are the light of the world. Don’t ever forget that. Luke Yates
