Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. These are the words of Clint Eastwoods character, Gunnery Sergeant Highway, in the film Heartbreak Ridge, and good advice if one wants to be a successful wildlife rehabilitator. We use this phrase a lot around here. Our latest improvisation/adaptation involved our quickly converting a portion of our big Flight Cage into a temporary fawn pen so we could help this fawn. The fawn was injured in a collision with a vehicle and rescued by a citizen who witnessed the accident. The fawn was quite dazed and banged-up when he arrived here. We administered medication, fluids, and other supportive care. The fawn was housed part of the first day in our Exam Room in a very large pet carrier, and spent that afternoon and night in the carrier in our Managers Office, where we could provide a quieter environment. In this little clip weve just moved the recovering fawn out to the temporary fawn pen and he is all about eating the maple leaves from the branches we put in the pen to make it more homey for him. By the next day he was literally bouncing off the walls and ready to go back, hopefully to rejoin his mom, and so we released him near where he was found.
