In 1644 John Milton (author of Paradise Lost) wrote Areopagitica. In it he talks about a marketplace of ideas as he argues for unlicensed printing, and the individual right of expression. It is, in my opinion, the best ever written opposition of censorship. The marketplace was a metaphor Milton used to illustrate his idea that ideas themselves - all ideas - should be open and available to anyone and everyone, with very little cost and no administrative blocking of access He wanted an end to a system of licensing that afforded printing only to those with enough money to pay the fees. Here in America, the internet finally gave us that - the unbridled ability for anyone of nearly any means to share their ideas - and there are some very powerful people who want to take it away. cbsnews/news/net-neutrality-obama-urges-strong-rules-to-protect-open-internet/
