In 1716, following the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, the lands of Peterhead, including the superiority of the town and harbour, became forfeit to the Crown when these were taken from the Earls Marischal (Keith family) for their treachery in supporting the Jacobite cause. In 1720, the Scottish Fishery Company – actually the York Buildings Company - bought the lands of Peterhead speculatively but when the company failed, in 1728 The Merchant Company stepped in to purchase the town and lands for £3000. In the early 20th century, feus were transferred to the townspeople, breaking the formal relationship between the Company and the area but the relationship with Peterhead remains close today.
