In 1762, a gentlemen playing in a gambling hall put meat between two pieces of bread. This allowed him to remain at the gambling table for long periods of time. That gentlemen was John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich and the First Lord of the Admiralty in England. In his role of the Admiralty, he authorized the financing of three ships for expeditions of the Pacific Ocean. Led by Capt. James Cook, he went on to be the first European to discover an archipelago of islands in 1778 that he named the Sandwich Islands. Those islands you know better today as the State of Hawaii this first Sunday in November.
