In 1786, John Adams enquired of Thomas Jefferson, The Great Democrat, what should America do to reduce the threat of the Barbary Pirates against American shipping. Adams had tried to negotiate a treaty but found the cost exorbitant. Jefferson replied with this message: It would be best to effect a peace through the medium of War. 1. Justice is in favor of this opinion. 2. Honor favors it. 3. It will procure us respect in Europe, and respect is a safe-guard to interest.
