In 1939 and 1940, there was a small jukebox manufacturer out of Hollywood, California, the Cinematone Corporation, which produced the only jukebox which took a penny. It held one record with up to twenty songs on it (10 on each side). They are fairly rare. There is a brochure for a 1941 model, but no known examples exist. Last night a friend of mine, Bill Butterfield in California, was watching a movie from 1946, and he spotted this unknown version, a round top similar to the 1941 version but with a microphone on top. It appears to be a telephone music version of the Cinematone of 1941, where you would insert your coin and get your music over a telephone line after talking to a live operator about what you wanted to hear. Fantastic when something unknown about 1940s jukeboxes turns up!
