In 1942 and 1943 the United States embarked upon an emergency project to construct two large pipelines to run from the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of New Jersey. The reason that these lines were built was that Tanker ships that were usually used to transport both oil and gas to the Eastern United States were being lost at an alarming rate to German Submarines. Those lines in 1947 were sold to Texas Eastern Gas Transmission Company and remain in use providing a steady flow of fuel to millions of homes, businesses, factories for heat, propulsion of factory machinery and to fuel millions of motor vehicles, ships and locomotives. A nation cannot operate without fuel and a nation cannot operate without having fuel in sufficient quantities and at cheap enough prices to propel a national economy efficiently and smoothly. Pipelines are the cheapest way to move products within a country that can be moved in pipelines and railroads, ships and barges are all necessary to move their valuable cargo at competitive. Trucks are last on the economic totem pole of means of transportation and the most expensive relative to the others. The Arabs themselves are now saying that the United States has the ability to produce and deliver all of our fuel to ourselves without having to buy a single drop from them or anyone else. That is now fact. Unfortunately, we can find more reasons to shoot ourselves in the foot than any people on Earth and we are proceeding to do it. We would rather buy 100 dollar a barrel oil from others than give 30 bucks a barrel domestically all for ideological reasons that sound so persuasive until one realizes that we could be getting our fuel for a third of what we are paying not by destroying our environment but by not being stupid, stubborn and yes, radical. We Americans can top the world in just about everything but we are the only people who would just rather not do that even if breaks us all and puts the bulk of our populace in poverty permanently.
