In 1947, my dad used his G.I. bill to attend a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. The college, quite sensibly, was dubious about having combat veterans mixing in the dorms with the 18 and 19 year old kids and let the vets live off campus. Thats how my dad ended up sharing an apartment with a veteran from the 442nd. Years later, my dad would still shake his head about the fact that his room mate and his entire family had been ripped from their home in California and transported to an internment camp in Colorado, and that his room mate had -- nonetheless -- volunteered for the Army, gone to Italy, and won a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.
