In 1954 Luis Bunuel finaly succeeded to bring on screen one of his earlier projects: the adaptation of Emily Brontës famous gothic novel Wuthering Heights. His movie was a Mexican production titled Abismos de pasiòn (aka Cumbres Burrascosas) who, when released, was not well received by the great part of the critics (even though cherished by the Mexican audience) who were literally abashed by its mise-en-scène. In Abismos de pasiòn Bunuel stresses the dramatic-romantic story of the two contrasted lovers in a particularly excessive way; rejecting (as ever) the pursuit of any realism, he enhances (but without distorting, reinterpreting or misundestanding) the very spirit of the novel building a feverish, flaming story of a love Bigger-than-Life and Stronger-than-Death. The loud, melodramatic score who follows every scene, the dark expressionistic cinematography, the emphasized, agitated performances of the players make this film a sort of iconic but suffered parody (or, better. elegy as Bunuel, like all the Surrealists, loved the Brontës and English popular literature) of the Gothic Romance of the 1800s. Abismos de pasiòn is today greatly re-appraised (like all the Bunuels Mexican movies) and it stands how one of the best (to me: the best) among the many, various adaptation of the Brontës novel.
