In 1955 Coltrane married Juanita Naima Grubbs, a Muslim convert, for whom he later wrote the piece Naima, and came into contact with Islam. They had no children together and were separated by the middle of 1963. Not long after that, Coltrane met pianist Alice McLeod. He and Alice moved in together and had two sons before he was officially divorced from Naima in 1966, at which time John and Alice were immediately married.
