In 1955 I sailed with my family from UK on P & O ship the SS Strathaird. I remember well stopping at Port Said, where it was considered too dangerous to disembark and lots of little boats came and sold stuff to the passengers by using ropes to haul the goods up to the decks. I remember sailing through the Suez Canal with armed troops on either side. I remember the smells and the heat of Aden ( on my 6th birthday) and then Ceylon. I remember the crossing of the equator and all the kids got dunked in ice cream. We disembarked in Melbourne and a year later went to Adelaide where we settled in Elizabeth. My family returned to UK in 1965 and I nearly died of depression. I hated the cold and the crowded small houses. I found a job and a bedsit in London whilst I planned my escape. Once again, I became a 10 pound pom in 1967. As soon as I turned 18 I returned to Australia (this time by plane) and settled in Sydney. But the most hilarious bit is that actually I was a zero pound pom as I was under 21 and did not have to pay.
