In 1958 I came up from Italy to spend the summer holidays at the Redemptorist Fathers seminary in Gars-am-Inn , Baveria. Three of us , two German priests and myself , had just come back from mountain-climbing in Austria and arrived back in Gars just in time for supper ...... I remember so well sitting there that evening , looking around the huge refectory at the crowd of some 200 Germans and thinking all the while , Shit ! 13 years ago we would have been shooting at one another on sight ... and to kill !
