In 1961 Nobel laureate Francis Crick (co-discoverer of DNA) - TopicsExpress

In 1961 Nobel laureate Francis Crick (co-discoverer of DNA) resigned from Churchill College in 1961 in protest to the colleges intention of building a chapel. As an institution dedicated to science, engineering and technology, Crick felt that there was no place for superstition on campus. Winston Churchill himself wrote him an appeasing letter in which he pointed out that the chapel was being built with funds raised entirely by private means, that it would be open to people of any faith and that nobody would be forced to attend. Professor Crick replied proposing the construction of a brothel. The construction would be funded entirely by private means, it would be open to anyone, no matter what their religious conviction, and nobody would be forced to attend. He also included a check for a down payment. (check out more stories like this one on The Moth)
