In 1962, the U.S. blew up a hydrogen bomb in space that was 100 times more powerful than Hiroshima. On the island of Johnston. The testing was part of a series called Starfish Prime and the blasts produce massive electrmagnetic interrence with the Earths magnetic field, knocked out manhy satellites and sent Beta particles into the earth. The testing also created a belt around the planet called Mev electrons. Several others were done prior and also created artifical radiation belts.
