In 1965, there were 29 Schraftts Restaurants in New York City -- one in The Bronx, two in Brooklyn and the rest in Manhattan. The Schraffts in The Bronx -- which was located at 33 E. Fordham Road -- was mentioned several times in E.L. Doctorow’s 1989 novel, “Billy Bathgate”: * At the edge of the park I flagged a taxi and had him take us all the way up to Fordham Road, to the same Schraffts where we had had our tea that day she had come with me to buy clothes. ... * I carried the shoes in a box and wore the new sneakers and we continued our way up Fordham until we found a Schrafft’s. And there we joined for their afternoon tea all the fine people of the Bronx. ... * [S]he was a plump young girl with blotchy skin and wore a uniform like the waitresses I had seen in the Schrafft’s on Fordham Road, black with white trim, and a little starched cap on her head ... Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, NYC lost its Schraffts Restaurants one-by-one until they were all gone. Some were sold to other restaurant chains, other locations were taken over by retailers. The one on Fordham Road is now occupied by Fabco Shoes. For more info: bit.ly/1yYogmL; bit.ly/1mBt7l4; nyti.ms/1pbjL3P
