In 1968, shortly after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, Ohio elementary school teacher Jane Elliott conducted a two-day experiment with her third grade class to teach a life lesson about discrimination. I viewed the Frontline episode today as part of a corporate seminar on diversity and inclusion. Frontline makes the original story and a few follow-ups available online. The film is from 1968 and therefore contains unedited language that is offensive today, yet, this experiment clearly shows that bigotry is a learned trait. These children agreed to participate in a lesson, they were enthusiastic about the prospect. Fifteen minutes after the division started, they were fully into the roles that they were being taught. Viewing this film may lead to self-inventory. Coincidentally, the Ash Wednesday service that I attended tonight included a sermon that mainly addressed the need for self-inventory during Lent. in the end, both events of this day were about being sensitive to our differences, celebrating diversity and being equipped to share the love of Christ with all people. What a blessing was this day. pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/etc/view.html
