In 1974, an AIA task force revealed that only 1.2 percent of architects were women. In other words, forty years ago the number of women practicing architecture was nearly a rounding error. There has been some change since then. Amale Andraos was just named Dean of Columbias graduate school of architecture. There are efforts to revive the legacies of historically marginalized women such as modernist and Art Deco designer Eileen Gray. Nevertheless, in 2012 only 17 percent of firm principles and partners were women. Despite this disheartening statistic, its easy to forget that theres a growing collection of women architects who have extensive bodies of work they can call their own. The desire to declare that fact, and more importantly to demonstrate and articulate it, lies at the heart of Making Space: 5 Women Changing Architecture, which just premiered at the Architecture and Design Film Festival in New York City.
