In 1975, only a couple of years before becoming part of Guilford - TopicsExpress

In 1975, only a couple of years before becoming part of Guilford Transportation Industries, the Maine Central Railroad purchased ten General Electric U18B freight locomotives. This photo shows a well-used U18B #407 at Waterville,ME., on 26 June 1981. The U-series were well known for their four-cycle FDL prime mover that sounded very much like a John Deer farm tractor. I recall being in North Adams, MA one evening when a Guilford freight job with four locomotives was making its way east toward the Hoosic Tunnel. The single U18B on this train really stood out with its John Deer signature sound, kind of a blub-blub-blub-blub echoing off the nearby hills.
