In 1977, after 21 years of marriage, my parents mutually decided that they needed a break - from their children. So my grandmother came over to look after the three of us while daddy and ma went for a twenty day tour of the South. They walked around beaches, ate interesting food, took in a few temples, and as was inevitable with ma, saw as many films as possible. One of the films they saw was Rays Shatranj Ke Khiladi, which had not released in Bengal at the time. Ma was so moved by the film that she wrote Satyajit Ray a letter telling him how much she loved the film and asking why the film had not released in Bengal. He actually replied, thanking her and told her that they were still trying to find a distributor in Bengal. That reply was one of mas most precious possessions. If you ever ask the Brigadier about it, he will insist on digging out the letter and showing it to you!
