In 1978, Devo (the Mothersbaugh brothers, Mark and Bob, the Casale brothers, Bob and Gerald, and Alan Myers) released their debut album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! Of the three songs from the album released as singles, two charted in the UK, Devos cover of the Rolling Stones I Cant Get No Satisfaction (#41) and the bands own Jocko Homo (#62) Jocko Homo is the tune that included the call response Are we not men?/We are Devo! The music video is actually part of a video the band shot called The Truth About De-Evolution which included this song and the bands cover of Secret Agent Man The term jocko homo comes from the title of a 1925 anti-evolution/creationist booklet entitled Jocko-Homo Heavenbound by Dr. Bertram H. Shadduck, a Methodist deacon, jocko-homo being a now obscure term for apeman. The first edition of the screed, 7,000 copies, sold out in 20 days and the tract went through 10 printings, with Dr. Shadduck self-publishing. The last printing was in 1944. Mark Mothersbaugh is on record saying the Are we not men line comes from a 1932 film adaptation of H. G. Wells Island of Dr. Moreau entitled Island of Lost Souls. I blame this tune, Blondie, and MTV on my love of 80s music.
