In 1978 a man wearing a yellow button-down featuring a Chinese dragon and his trademark suspenders takes the stage at the Roxy to do his comedy. Around 10 years later in Arizona I watch the rerun on Comedy Central. Im hooked. The energy this man is exuding seems to reach out through the television, through the decade and reach me. Cocaine induced perhaps(probably), the high level at which he operates physically, intellectually(because of/in spite of) puts me in awe. For the first time in my life the term Genius has its real-world application. The places he could take me in the blink of an eye, from Kansas to the Moon and through the wall still boggle my mind. Yet the threads to lead me were always there no matter the distance his bizarre and awesome mind traveled. I have never laughed so hard nor so long. About 30min into his hour long show, he takes another giant leap and reenters as a crazy old coot. he is still making me laugh, but what I experience is not quite like before. This man is dropping truth in between the lines. He is speaking to us. Not performing for us, but SPEAKING to us, to me. He says From me to you, you got to be crazy.....youre only given a little spark of madness and if you lose that, youre nothing. Dont. From me to you, dont ever lose that, because it keeps you alive.... I heard this when he says it. I really did, and it filled me up and it broke my heart. Whenever someone that has inspired us leaves, it hurts us. But this one broke my heart
