In 1979, when this song came out, I was working the night shift in a Ford plant in Metuchen NJ putting tires on the left side of Pintos. Fifty-two cars an hour 10 hours most nights. My partner on the right side was Perry Du Bose, a black guy from Newark who had saved my life when they first put me on the job by teaching me to bounce the tire to the wheel rather than carry it. At some point I had gone to Meshuggenah Daves on Coney Island Ave. and bought a medium-sized boom box. I got a couple of hooks that they used in the paint dept. and hung the box about ten feet up on my side of the work station. Wed listen to jazz (...there I go, there I go, there I go...) or rock ( I cant be your beast of burden...) or whatever and it made our station a very appealing place for other workers to spend their breaks. One night Perry came in kind of excited, telling me hed heard this thing on the radio earlier. So we found the station that was playing it and probably listened to it at least twice. One take, kids. I thought it was a novelty song. :) https://youtube/watch?v=rKTUAESacQM
