In 1980, I entered the USAF. My step-dad made a deal with me - TopicsExpress

In 1980, I entered the USAF. My step-dad made a deal with me to match whatever I could save for as long as my first enlistment. So I signed-on for 6 years as an OSI agent. And within a year was asked to either get out with an honorable discharge, or cross-train into another field (evidently my sordid past involving a 6 bong came back to haunt me. Let that be a lesson to you, kids!). My original 3 goals when joining were: 1) To Learn how to juggle. 2) To learn to play guitar. 3) To save enough money to start a company. The company was going to be a Datsun-Toyota-Mazda hot rodding shop. I dubbed it DaToyShop. Yes, I was THAT clever. And lame. Funny: Hotrodding Japanese cars is all the rage. Imagine what I coulda done? Anyhow, by 1982 my step-dad had resigned his part of the deal. Said something about me saving too much (yes, I learned to live on $80 a month. And Im glad. I kept saving anyhow. And my dear mother Loralie funded my education in mail-in Robotics courses through ITT. See? I missed the Japanese car movement AND Robotics as primary businesses. What a dork! Anyhow, In 82 I was a voracious reader of Inc. Magazine. The Inc 500 fascinated me. Private companies that grew like weeds. Thats my kinda gig. So I reset my goal to form an Inc 500 company. My brother Doug and I collaborated on our first startup. Within a year or so, it was acquired by a local fast growth firm. In true Timothy Ferriss hacking fashion, we became an Inc 500 company the next year (my little division grew almost 1,000%. Combined with the longevity of the acquiring company, it allowed us to become an Inc 500 company in 2 years instead of 5. Take that, TIM! Anyhow, this long-winded dialogue has to do with ANYONE seeking a job or career in a growing market. This is a course Ive taught for years. Because everyone has times when theyre stuck. Feeling like theres little hope or available positions for them. But thats not true. You just have to be willing to explore the unknown. You can literally get the job you want. Making the money you need and want (eventually). Doing what youre good at (inherent strengths) Living where you want to live. And none of it is rocket science. In fact, you can grab the list below, sort by any criteria, and find a dozen or more companies absorbing employees at a rapid rate. (The local Business Journal and business reporters for the local paper should also be your friends). You may not want to walk the tightrope of the entrepreneur. I get that. It can be brutal. But you CAN play big. With the entrepreneurs. By joining one of these fast-growth Inc 5000 companies. inc/inc5000/list
