In 1989, after the fall of the Communist government, the reality of life in Romanias orphanages was exposed to the world, including shocking images of neglect and physical abuse. Vişinel Balan was just two months old, when in 1987, he was put into state care. At the age of nine, he ran away to live in a railway station, though he was soon returned to the system. Life for Vişinel is very different now. At 27, he now has two degrees and is running an organisation to support other young people in Romanias child-protection system.
