In 1992 (after success in Cocktail, Top Gun and Born on the Fourth of July) Cruise was making a film called Far and Away with Nicole Kidman and Ron Howard, he was filming in Ireland and one night stopped off in a local pub with some other crew members. My grandfather was one of the people in that pub, they were raising a little money for a local kid who was unwell and needed help (bare in mind late 80s/early 90s Ireland was dirt poor) and Cruise basically asked what was happening. My Gramps and his friends, hellishly drunk, told Cruise of the boy and how they were singing to raise money. So, Cruise said that should they raise money, he would add double the amount to the amount. In return, Cruise asked that the men get up and sing a traditional Irish song (for fun and also for reference as Cruise was playing an Irish man). Now bare in mind these are large 40 something drunk Irish men got up and sang, they were pretty awful but they kept their word and while Cruise didn’t drink and sort of went around and took a few photos for the pub and hung out with a few people. At the end of the night, Cruise heard the amount, which was like 100 Irish pounds… he donated his money, thanked everyone, left and made his film. He had donated 1000.
