In 1993, a few months after Dr Chee Soon Juan joined the SDP, he was fired from his position as a lecturer at NUS by the Head of the Psychology Department, Dr S Vasoo (who was an MP for the PAP at the time), for allegedly using research funds to buy stamps to send personal letters to the United States. This action is clearly politically motivated because even if Dr Chee did use research funds to buy stamps, it is a small matter which would usually just get a slap on the wrist. Furthermore, there is no concrete proof of this misuse of funds. Dr Chee denies the allegations and after his sacking, had gone on a hunger strike. Meanwhile, PAP MP Alvin Yeo has been proven by the high court to have overcharged $1million in legal fees. $1m is no small amount and it shows the lack of integrity and greed of the lawyer. If no actions is taken towards PAP MP Alvin Yeo for overcharging his client by more than $1,000,000, it just shows that the PAP is above the law.
