In 1993 we traveled to Chișinău, Moldova Republic, which had been part of Romania before WWII. We distributed thousands of Romanian New Testaments to the ethnic Romanians who lived there. We had two vans and stayed in a hotel near the city center. One day I was driving and another person in our group turned on the radio and was channel surfing when suddenly an American song came across the airwaves! But it was not just an American song; it was an American Christian song! Our translator said that he knew about the radio station, and made arrangements to take us there the next day. The next day we drove to the city center and went up to the top floor of a seven story building. There it was: a Christian radio station! It was operated by Florin Pendic, a Romanian born American citizen. After the revolution in 1990, Florin had moved back to Moldova from Hickory, North Carolina in order to start a gospel radio station. People in Moldova were so interested in learning English that when Florin broadcasted in English, his listener base mushroomed! His station and transmitter was positioned on the top floor of the tallest building and near the city center. He was able to reach most of the city’s half million people with his little 1,000 watt transmitter! Brother Larry Russell with Wholesale Tapes here in Chattanooga gave me a box full of sample Southern Gospel CD’s, which I gave to Brother Florin. People in Chișinău began to learn “Southern English” and sing Gospel songs!
