In 1995 I was only 15 and used to ride over to my buddy Justin Stewarts house on my older brothers hand-me-down moped w/ my skateboard strapped to the back w/ a bungee to meet up for session in Saginaw, Texas - typically at the old Diamonds parking lot on Main Street where there was a good curb to grind and a nice rail to do board slides on. The spot was across the tracks from the Burrus-Mills grain elevators, which was the company that sponsored western swing stars Light Crust Doughboys to hock their product early on. That location hipped me to the musical history that I still carry w/ me today. Music was king and anytime not spent skateboarding (or going over to some girls house that we liked) was spent playing the newest records wed discovered...Wed really taken a liking to Roky Ericksons All that May Do My Rhyme CD/LP heck even our parents liked it...a dose of singer / songwriter material mixed w/ some psych rock vibrations. Wed also just tapped into Rokys earlier work w/ The 13th Floor Elevators. I was a fan, so when Openers II book of Rokys lyrics came out on Henry Rollins book label, 2.13.61 (*first pressing of Openers was put out by Rokys childhood friend George Kinney of the Golden Dawn fame) I was buying. Many of the songs that were in the book we had not heard...Bumblebee Zombie was one of those. Not knowing how the song went would read the lyrics over and over with a variety of emphasis in a fake English accent as if we were at a poetry reading, typically never getting to the end of the page before we busted out in laughter. Years later, I finally heard a recorded version of that number but I still always think back to reading it the way we did and cutting up.
