In 1999 Cornelius purchased our first Ladder Company. The truck was a 105 Seagrave Platform named Ladder 4 and it served our community well. The truck was purchased to provide fire protection for the new hotels, apartment complexes and large single family dwellings that we popping up on the West Side of town. As our town has continued to develop over the last 15 years the focus of the newer developments became more dense, neo-traditional, urban type developments. These newer developments also began to incorporate commercial components as well as numerous multifamily dwellings. The majority of these developments have narrow tree lined streets with on street parking as well as narrow alleyways that run in between the houses. As these neighborhoods became more prevalent our 99 Ladder Company became increasingly harder to maneuver around town due to its large size. In 2007 we had the opportunity to combat these problems by purchasing a used tractor drawn aerial from Bedford, Va. TDAs have traditionally been used in dense urban cities in the Northeast and on the West Coast. The used TDA, Hook & Ladder 44, has proven to be extremely effective in proper truck placement and has added maneuverability to our Ladder Company that we were not able to accomplish with Ladder 4. Within the last few months the Town of Cornelius has agreed to purchase a new TDA to be delivered in 2016. We also decided to sell the 1999 Ladder 4 that had become to large to maneuver around town. Ladder 4 was sold to St. James Minnesota. The department used funds from the sale of Ladder 4 to purchase a smaller, more maneuverable Ladder for Station 2. The truck arrived late Monday night and will be readied for service over the next month. The truck will have some alterations made by our friends at Seagrave Carolina and then have the new graphics installed. Firefighters will train on the truck in March and place it in service shortly afterwards.
