In 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, the Apostle Paul wrote a wonderful benedictory prayer: Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts . . . There are many comforts that may be had in this world. I am grateful for friends who comfort me in times of trouble, standing alongside me to remind me that I am not alone. But they are not always available in the hours of distress. There are activities that bring comfort, distracting the mind from the things that are troubling me, but they are not lasting. There are songs kept on my Iphone that always comfort my heart, but again, they are not always available and sometimes do not bring the desired comfort. Some people speak of the angels coming to comfort them. I have even heard people pray for that. Some pray for the saints of old to comfort them, and their testimony can certainly do that even if their presence is impossible. But there is One who comforts me that far exceeds all others. It is Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. What a pleasure to know that in our times of greatest need, Jesus Himself comes to us through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We sing What a Friend We Have in Jesus, and what truth there is in that song! Jesus Himself comes to us to comfort our hearts and establish us in every good work. God the Father, who has given us everlasting comfort and good hope through grace, and Jesus the Son, come to us in our daily lives to strengthen and encourage the troubled heart. Our hearts and minds are comforted, our spirits raised, and our feet established in the way of peace. If all this be true, why need we apply to any other for comfort? All other comforts will ultimately fail. But the comfort we have through Christ, and the Father, will never fail us for He has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. This day, in your hour of trouble, fly to the throne of grace where you will find immeasurable comfort for your souls and of a kind that will last even to eternity.
