In 2000, I was assaulted by a juvenile in lockup. She had mental health issues, was only 14 years old, and was a great kid who needed help. The program had to press charges as part of protocol, and I found myself in court at this 14 year olds arraignment. The District Attorney stood up, said that she spoke to the victim at length (me) and that I wanted to press full charges on the girl and have her in the custody of youth services until she turned 18. I had never met the woman. While I didnt know how this was all supposed to go, I raised my hand from the back of the courtroom. The judge looked at me oddly and said, who are you? Im the victim I then pointed to the DA, and I never met that woman in my life. I do not want to press any charges, I want this girl back in our program. It was such a crazy experience. The girl was returned to our program and the charges were dropped. BUT, if I hadnt gone to court, the DA would have lied and she would have been in and out of juvenile detention for the next four years.
