In 2001, NIIT and the International Finance Corporation (part of World Bank Group) started a joint venture named Hole-in-the-Wall Education Limited (HiWEL). With the sole aim of setting up learning stations for children from disadvantaged communities in rural areas and urban slums, HiWEL was first tested in 1999 in a slum in Delhi. Considered a path-breaking learning methodology that was conceived by Dr. Sugata Mitra, Chief Scientist at NIIT, the program’s first adopter was the Government of NCT of Delhi that set up 30 Learning Stations in one of the resettlement colonies of Delhi. Shortly after, Learning Centres were set up across 23 locations in rural India. The HiWEL program has reached the likes of Cambodia as well through the Ministry of External Affairs. HiWEL is now set to scale up the idea and make a significant contribution to improving elementary education and life skills of children across the world. #NonTechInspiration
