In 2003, when Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow began their "31 Days in July" project, they set forth the strict rule that their paintings must be inspired each day by a story that appears on the cover of The Washington Post. As the project entered its 5th or 6th year, they began to broaden their scope and not limit it to the Post - both as a reaction to the Post itself and because of the inherent weakness of relying on print media that was out of date by the time they woke up to paint each day. Now in the 10th & final year of the project, I do still check the cover of The Washington Post each morning as a point of comparison to see which stories they run. Important events around the world today include the confirmed death of an Al-Qaeda member by drone strike in Yemen (heck, yesterday *was* terror Tuesday after all), the ongoing and escalating civil war in Syria, the wave of violence plaguing Iraq (2,500 people already this year, including at least 250 so far this month), the Bradley Manning trial and hunt for Edward Snowden which are essentially putting journalism on trial. And the list goes on ... But, in spite of all that, one of the cover stories on The Washington Post today was about an magician and his rabbit. So I painted about that... danaellyn/7_13/july17.html
