In 2004 I had an 8th grade beginning band student in Puyallup, WA who I adored. She was bright and a great student and seemed wise beyond her years. About midway through the year she came to me and said Ms. Asher, I wont be in band any more because Im going to a new school and new foster home. My immediate thought was that I wanted to adopt her or at least provide a stable home for her. Of course at that time I couldnt- just as right now I couldnt, but all the sudden I feel like I have an elderly foster child. Im not ready to take this on yet here I am in the middle of it. Are we ever actually ready for the real challenges thrown at us? My friend Bria once said this resistance Im feeling is progress and that resonates with me so often. Im thankful that I can help this man even if it is not convenient or comfortable for me all the time. And, it doesnt change my mind that being a foster parent may be in my future... Just not right now.
