In 2008 I had wanted to see the movie Valkyrie with Tom Cruise, because I like Tom Cruises acting and personality, and I liked the idea of a plot to kill Hitler. I didnt go see the film because I was suspicious this was yet another attempt like Das Boat and the German film Stalingrad to rehabilitate the Nazis and Germanys role in the war. In the 1970s there were also sorts of attempts at rehabilitation, the film where Marlon Brando played a German soldier, Hogans Heroes, in which the German military were laughable buffoons but not mean. Last week I saw parts of Valkyrie, and yet again the Germans dont do anything wrong; when this generation of young film goers should have an impression of what a Concentration Camp was like, and the racism, cruelty of German aristocrats, and what right wing politics was really like under Hitler. You wouldnt get the sense that the Germans did anything wrong in WWII in the scenes I saw, as all these guys strut around in their fancy Hugo Boss uniforms.
