In 2008 I joined Unisa and this guy in the picture with me was a security guard. The friendliest security guard I have ever seen in my life - always joking, teasing and smiling. We became good friends - sort of. It was clear that his life was not the easiest but I never heard him complain about his life or situation. He was at work everyday - morning shift and night shift. Then one day in 2011 or 2012 he came to say good bye to me because he was leaving his job at Unisa. Surprised, I asked him why and he explained that he is going to train as a police. He explained that he had applied for the opportunity since he completed matric and has been waiting since. Wow I am going to miss him I thought and he left. This year I met him on the road in full uniform working as a traffic cop. I called and waved in excitement - he waved back. There is a lesson in this story: complaining about our current situations does not make the situation better. We have to do something about it. This brother did something about his situation and now his future looks different. #WiseUp
