In 2009 I organised a candle lit vigil at Aberdeen university for the 413 children killed. I wanted 1 candle lit for each child. As this was considered a fire risk, I had to hold the vigil outside. No worries, I ordered outdoor candles from Norway. But they werent going to arrive in time. So I began collecting jam jars. At some point in this process, it began to dawn on me - exactly HOW MANY 413 is. I managed to collect 126, still way too low, more promises of jars, but the 2 or 3 offered here and there was just not mounting up. As each jar represented a child, the enormity of this number began to seep into my soul. In the end, I cancelled the vigil, as I couldnt find a way to gather all the jars that would keep the candles alight. And each one represented the conception, birth, life and death of one child. One child like Yara, a unique, beautiful, bright, surprising, probably sometimes annoying unique, individual child who will never be replicated, no matter how long we humans survive on this planet. Never. Ever. And tonight I grieve her loss. But by tomorrow my tears will have dried and I will get on with my life. (Unlike her parents.) Lets not forget Yara. Lets carry her and all the others on our hearts, as we intensify our efforts to stop this utter madness. If not us, then who?
