In 2009 I started my journey in the career of nursing. I have worked at Mary Washington Hospital working nights in mother/baby, floated to the NICU and PEDS to be a HUC and a CNA. I’ve worked at VCU Health System as a Tech in Radiology starting IV’s for outpatients getting scans 16 hours a day! I’ve worked at Martha Jefferson Hospital nights/days as a CNA in Med/Surg which was the hardest work I’ve ever done and I applaud the girls who are still there. I’ve worked at UVA’s LTAC hospital learning the ways to care for patients being weaned from vents and have infectious post op wounds, and finally I’m currently working in the Neonatal ICU. I have 5 years of experience in almost every stage of life..I’ve seen teen girls loose a mom to stage 4 cancer she didn’t know she had, grandparents drift off into their forever sleep, babies fighting for their next breath..I’ve celebrated life, and held the hands of those who morn…I’ve put in countless amounts of time in school when I’ve had to work fulltime. Ive given up weekends and holidays and nights at home with my loved ones to care for others. If I was in admission at Centra College of Nursing and I knew this about an applicant I would be delighted to know this young girl has been devoted to the same career since out of high school…but instead I open the letter and read…”Thank you for your recent application to Centra College of Nursing. Admission is competitive and there were a large number of qualified applicants for limited space. Unfortunately we will be unable to offer you a space in the class. Best Regards” No explanations, or tips for what I should do for next time, nothing. Just NO. But….so we are clear…I’m okay with this letter, I prepared myself for it weeks ago so I wouldn’t go through an “I’m so devastated” phase. I feel like God tried telling me to move on before Centra did..So I have. I’ve made arrangements to move forward with my second passion in life; a career that I can climb to the top without 5 degrees a rewarding career that’s still helping people. I don’t need a fancy nursing degree to make me feel good about myself because I know Ive made a difference in people’s lives and I’d like to call that phase one of my life, now I’m moving on to phase 2.
