In 2011, I wrote this post about the suicide in India and it’s sadly still relevant. . That time, a 22 year old student committed suicide and her ex boyfriend who had recently broken up with her, was being prosecuted and villainized by the media. Now, 2 years later, Jiah Khan commits suicide, and this time, its another ex boyfriend who is the purported “cause “ of suicide. The sad truth is that India has one of the highest rates of suicide and perhaps the least understanding of it. In india, we believe that we can legislate and police against suicide. Suicide is a crime in india. A idiotic ironic joke? Or maybe a diabolical plan , to allow harassment of our citizens to continue into the afterlife. The police often says, “We are investigating the cause of suicide,” Unless the police are also mental health professionals, they have no business investigating the cause for suicide - that is the role of the psychiatrist. The only role of the police is to determine the cause of death. Many people mistakenly believe that suicide has an external cause - either a person or an event. Our media loves propagating these myths. So much better for ratings to have a villain than the less satisfactory truth that suicide occurs due to an interplay of temperament and personality, mood, and society, of situation, and perspective, of genetics and biology.
