In 2011, the Government said of the trial that if monitoring showed so-called controlled shooting to be humane and effective the intention was to roll the policy out nationally. Yet only 120 out of 5,000 dead badgers will be inspected. What kind of scientific experiment is that? In reality, this is a brutal box ticking exercise. Already reports are coming out of Somerset of screaming badgers, injured and not killed outright. The destruction of British wildlife is being rail-roaded. Killing badgers is a smokescreen for failed agricultural and political policy, which panders to farmers who refuse to face up to their own failings – and it won’t even work.
