In 2012, I was awarded a Media scholarship by International Aids Society to cover the XIX International AIDS 2012 conference (July 22-28) in Washington DC, USA. I did not make it to the conference because USA Embassy in Nairobi thought I would not come back to my motherland after the event . Two years down the line, more than 100 people mainly HIV researchers across the globe on the ill- fated MH17 flight were headed for the AIDS 2014 conference in Melbourne. You can imagine how tough it is for the conference organizers in Melbourne to look at the empty plenary seats, the posters without their presenters. More saddening are the family back home who were waiting anxiously for that call to confirm their safe arrival. May we take this moment to remember in prayers the families of these researchers who died in course of finding cure for the dreaded HIV virus.
