In 2012, students ages 12-18 experienced an estimated 615,600 incidents of theft and 749,200 violent victimizations while at school. Educators have responded by implementing programs and adopting policies to address school safety and violence prevention. Because of these efforts, we know a lot about how to make schools safe in general, but we know much less about which specific mechanisms work in certain settings and populations. NIJ launched the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative as a large-scale, integrated research effort to build knowledge about the effectiveness of specific school safety efforts. go.usa.gov/w2TG
