In 2012 we played La Peña in Berkeley in support of our Joven Navegante vinyl release. Days prior to the gig we were contacted by a woman named Michele Serros, who invited us to a free meal at her husband Antonios vegetarian restaurant, Flacos, before our show. We happily and gratefully accepted their kind invitation and had some delicious vegetarian taquitos with amazing green spicy salsa with the two of them before our gig. During our meal we learned that Michele was a longtime Chicano Batman fan (proven by the fact that she owned one of our first ever t-shirts; purple with the Laker gold bat), a poet, an author of several humorous and touching books, one being Chicana Falsa, and a writer for the first season of the George Lopez show! By the end of the meal we had exchanged some great stories, music, amazing food and books. From that day on we have called them our friends. Sometime later we learned that Michele was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She has been battling the disease for some time now and recently it has advanced to Stage 4 and has metastasized to various parts of her body, paralyzing her left vocal cord leaving her unable to speak. After over a year of paying for treatment Michele and Antonio have maxed out their savings. Due to the high medical bills her friends and family have set up a fundraiser to help the couple pay for Micheles care and help her better battle the disease. If you would like to help them out too please feel free to share this post or even donate! Thank you friends for any help and much love to you Michele and Antonio during this difficult time!
